San Gimignano

San Gimignano

M.C. Escher, San Gimignano, woodcut, 28,9 x 49,3 cm, January-February 1923

In 1922, Escher visited the Italian town of San Gimignano, nestled between Florence and Siena. He elaborated the drawings and sketches he made there into prints at home. In this woodcut, Escher highlights the monumental towers of the medieval town, once built as a symbol of prosperity and power. In the dark sky, the towers glow brightly, making them appear even more impressive.
