To further celebrate and enrich the Islamic heritage at the heart of the exhibition Escher & Islamic Art: 20 Perspectives, Escher in The Palace will welcome the Amsterdams Andalusisch Orkest (AAO) to the palace on Friday evening, 26 June. Guest curator of the exhibition, Qasim Arif, and artistic director of the AAO, Mohamed Aadroun, will discuss Andalusian heritage and Escher’s fascinations, followed by a concert by the AAO.

This evening offers a deeper insight into the Spanish-Islamic cultural heritage that so inspired Escher and the contemporary artists featured in the exhibition. The visual narrative of the exhibition Escher & Islamic Art: 20 Perspectives is enriched by a musical experience.
The AAO aims to connect the art and culture of Andalusian heritage with the present day. The orchestra presents music from the Andalusian tradition in the broadest sense; they perform mystical Sufi and folk repertoires, as well as other musical genres such as malhoun (Sanaa Maharati) and flamenco (Estrella Morente), and music from West Asia (e.g. sharqi) and the Maghreb. The AAO not only brings these diverse musical genres to Europe, but also enriches them with (existing and original) stories, poems and theatre. In doing so, they enhance the expressive power of this rich music, thereby building a bridge between the present and the past.
