In the winter of 1925/1926 Escher worked on a series of six woodcuts about the creation of the world as told in the Book of Genesis, 'I sei giorni della creazione'.

The series gathered a lot of appreciation, both in the Netherlands as in Italy where he exhibited them in May 1926. Escher finished off his series with a woodcut, in which he incorporated all the titles and a group of birds.
