In March 1932 Escher created a lithograph of a lion. There is a story behind this. In 1923, on the terrace of the Albergo del Toro hotel in Ravello, Escher met the Umiker family. He fell in love with their daughter Jetta and in June 1924 they got married. The couple returned several times to Ravello and made excursions to places like San Cosma, Atrani, Vietri, Puntone, Scala, Positano, Praiano and Amalfi.

M.C. Escher, Lion of the Fountain in the Piazza at Ravello, lithograph, March 1932
During one of their visits to Ravello, in 1925, Jetta took a picture of Maurits sitting next to the lion at the Piazza Fontana Moresca in Ravello. Several years later, this photo would form the basis for this lithograph.
