Letters full of admiration: a special loan
7 August 2025
During his lifetime, M.C. Escher received several letters from enthusiasts sharing their admiration for his work. Not all of these have survived, which makes it very special when relatives lend such letters to a museum. The granddaughter of Hendrik Dekker temporarily loans his carefully written letter about the print Reptiles (1943) and Escher's reaction to it to Escher in The Palace. The handwritten correspondence will be on display from 18 March to 14 September 2025.
About Escher
Techniques
Escher was a printmaker, but what exactly is that? Read the pages below to find out more about the techniques he used: woodcut, wood engraving, linocut, lithography, etching and mezzotint. Each of them has its own particular qualities, so the prints made using these techniques differ in terms of their complexity and visual character.

Escher, Bach, Gödel: Perspectives and (im)possibilities
Escher in The Palace is organising a unique concert in which the world-famous prints of M.C. Escher merge in surprising ways with music and mathematics. Classical music forms the common thread, interspersed with fascinating discussions on themes from Escher's oeuvre, the mathematics of Kurt Gödel and Alan Turing, and the compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Wood engraving workshop with guided tour
From 20 November 2025 to 15 March 2026, Escher in The Palace will be exhibiting the marvellous work of graphic artist Anne Desmet. Like Escher, she is a master of graphic techniques, from lino and litho to woodcut and wood engraving. The work of a graphic artist is truly a craft and requires utmost concentration, mastery of the material and a steady hand. To really understand how the incomparable prints of Anne Desmet, and of Escher, are made, you would actually have to try it yourself..

Escher for the blind and visually impaired - SOLD OUT
Several times a year, Escher in The Palace organises special guided tours for those who are blind or visually impaired. Before regular opening hours, between 09.30 and 11.00, we open our doors and take you on a tour of a number of masterpieces from the museum’s permanent exhibition.
